Contemporary barbershop harmony
Our music has its origins in the acappella singing style used by male African American
quartets in the late 1800s.
Modern four part harmony barbershop style for women is written in four parts - lead,
bass, baritone and tenor. It is arranged around eleven basic chords with the major triad
and the barbershop seventh and ninth being the most important.
The success of our artform is based on "ringing" these chords through voice resonance,
note accuracy and blending all four parts. We have ongoing coaching and education
programs both from our music director and regional and international experts.
We place emphasis on showmanship and performance and use movement and
choreography when we sing.

LEAD
A harmony part, usually holding a counter
melody. Although this is the highest voice
it is different from the traditional soprano.
The tenor should have a light, sweet,
pure tone that will complement and not
overpower a lead voice.
Similar range to lead, often crossing over
their melody line. Requires blending and
warmer voices, able to sing intricate intervals.
LEAD
BARITONE
BASS
TENOR
Just the place for low voiced women with
rich, mellow qualities, this part provides the
foundation of the music and solidifies the
four-part harmony. Women who sing alto
often fit well into bass or baritone roles.
